Rep. Negrete McLeod Calls on House Agriculture Committee to Examine the Food Stamp Program

Press Release

Date: July 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino) called on fellow committee members of both parties during last week's hearing of the Subcommittee on Department Operations, Oversight, and Nutrition to examine the access, integrity, and intricacies of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). As a conferee of the recently passed Farm Bill, the success of the administration of the food stamp program remains a main priority of Rep. Negrete McLeod and Congress must continuously work to ensure the program is operating efficiently, by identifying and reducing fraud, and to increase the food purchasing power of low-income households.

Members used the hearing to learn about the program, including how it addresses hunger, how it is linked to other federal programs, and how opportunities or barriers impact the ability of low-income families to secure employment and job training to lift themselves out of poverty and off of SNAP.

At the conclusion of the hearing, Rep. Negrete McLeod said, "I believe that this committee hearing is just the first step in a larger discussion on how to increase efficiencies in the program, identify and reduce abuse, and create a system that not only help enroll families into the program, but also finds ways to successfully help transition them out."
